"Abstractly surreal"

submission: MindFeed
date: July 27, 2008

I was sort of reminded of Portal a bit through this, but that's probably just me. Bagels and orange juice...?

It's pretty neat to play this sort of quiz because of the atmosphere you put into it--it's not just some clear-cut, defined answer sheet, and one never knows the effect of each one...I got a 93, but I have no clue what that means. The ambiguity of some of the questions here make for a surreal experience, and the music got into my head after a while. I'd say this was one cool flash.

I was honest this time through, but I think I'm going to take it again while lying everywhere. Heheh. Great work on this--there's still a few grammar errors, but nothing serious enough to burn my eyes. Keep making neat, out-of-the-damn-box stuff like this. :D

Author's Response:

6th person to say that it reminded them of portal :D
And yes, Bagels and Orange juice.
Honesty gets you the most accurate score, so, i'm glad you did it.
93 is a great score.
And yes, some people have said there's a couple grammar errors, but,
nobody is perfect ;[
Oh well, thanks for reviewing :]

"Great additions"

submission: Amorphous+
date: July 26, 2008

I've played the original a long while back, and it came as a pleasant surprise to see that you've added quite a bit of neat incentives, like the awards, saving, and the most important one: the pause button. Heheh.

Again, the descriptions you took the time to type up and stick in really fleshed it out. You have a better control of vocabulary than a lot of other petty authors on Newgrounds, and even though there's no plot or clear cut motivation for our little hero with the big sword, there's still a large amount of humor and fun to be obtained from this gem. It's hilarious how the screen starts to get covered and bogged down by the swarming and bouncing "multicolored blobs," and the insanity keeps ramping up when oil slicks slash the screen, acid and splatter runs across the battlefield, and fuzzy animals and spikes charge at you from all directions. I find the gameplay to be of a real refreshing style, far different than many of the other flash games out there, and in its simplicity, still one of the best of them all.

There's an amazing wealth of ideas roaming about in this game, and I have to wonder whether you just had a flash of inspiration and decided to make a flash game with myriad kinds of blobs. Somehow, the synthesis of all of the enemies and the simplicity of the combat transforms what could have been another boring, unoriginal clickfest into a carefully made strategic action game emboldened by its uniqueness and richened by the flavor text that you painstakingly typed in. There's a huge amount of factors to consider as one plays this, ranging from a simple "slash or run" when a cowardly purple blob stares down, to an incredibly panicked, adrenaline-pumped "which way do I fucking run" when spikes, animals, and acid approach like predators to the blob hunter.

Through all of this, the intertwined awards and rewards serve as beautiful and cleverly named achievements and incentive. Slashing a huge conglomerate of killer goo and seeing the satisfying award fade in from the bottom of the screen adds another layer to the already fascinating and addicting game. I think you've done a most awesome job at putting this together again with the little flairs and flourishes, and this game seriously is a contender for one of the best time-killers on Newgrounds.

I don't know if I could possibly add more ideas for improvements, since admittedly, I haven't even uncovered all the blobs yet. Maybe give the guy some new attacks, or make another style of play that has a health system to appeal to players that don't have the time to plumb the depths of the strategies in the game? >.>

You have to make another one of this, and you must use your ridiculous creativity and conceptual ideas to shape another excellent, exemplary game. This is amazingly good--I want to play more from you.

Author's Response:

First, I'm always pleased to hear the opinions of people who've played the old version (and extra nice to see people playing this version who were supporters of the game even in it's original, bare-bones form).

To be perfectly honest, this game grew out of nothing. The first pieces of this game were my first images and bits of code to ever create in flash, and I just sort of continued building on it and adding to it until it eventually became this. So I guess in a sense it was sort of an accident.

It's so satisfying to hear people enjoying playing with it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. I do have several other flash projects planned, but as I've mentioned I do it as a passtime and I'm a bit ADD when it comes to my projects... so I'm not promising anything, but hopefully you'll see some new (and completely different) things from me in the future.

Thank you for a great review and I'm glad you're enjoying it!

The Last Stand 2

"Great zombie game"

submission: The Last Stand 2
date: July 19, 2008

This is an exquisite example of how to design and execute a shooter. Although zombies are a bit overused, this game puts them to good use. First, I like the changes you made to this one, allowing for city exploration and better use of time, the addition of supplies and different weapons in each towns, and finding traps and survivors that can use your guns. I felt that the town and the limited amount of days made the game more focused and gave it a sense of direction, and the myriad variety (compared to other games) of weapons that actually handled differently added another idea of strategy and preparation before fighting the zombies.

Some minor flaws remain though. It seems like the compound bow that you find in one of the small towns is crazily overpowered. I used it after I found it, and the reload time and damage is akin to a fast reloading magnum that murders dogs in one hit and most other zombies in two headshots. Once I found 5 teammates to help, everything except for Jonestown was overly easy and a bit drawn out. Also, when I first played the game, I was swamped in Jonestown, completely not expecting how insane it was. In the end, I skipped Jonestown by stocking up on supplies. Sometimes, fighting the zombies starts to feel boring, and I didn't use the traps that much--maybe find another way to integrate them?

There's also a bug in the game that makes your journal pop out, usually when you travel, but exit the travel screen. It basically allows you two rest days, where you can repair your barricade and then it lets you get supplies from buildings twice. Not exactly sure what causes it, but if you feel inclined to, you can look into it.

I think some improvements can include a moving segment, where you're traveling, with an isometric or a top-down view. It's weird how all the zombies are only attacking you in the city, and when you travel there's no zombies at all. Also, it might be more interesting to allow greater movement, and see the barricade coming down graphically, so when it breaks down, you can try to avoid the zombies with a health bar, or see yourself get slowly injured.

Either way, this game is a shining example of defense games and shooters. I found it extremely engaging, albeit with not much replay value, but in the end I feel that this game is one of the best defense/shooting flash games out there.

Piano Sonata: Desperation

"Good in the beginning"

date: February 6, 2008

The beginning of this has some very nice chords that convey desperation and straining hope very well, but then after the 20 seconds, it becomes unintelligible for me, so it felt like you added too many weird progressions that sound like key changes. At around 00:25, it gets awesome again, til 1:14. Then you add in some weird attempt at an epic feeling, with the same weird progressions, and I just didn't really like it. You should stick to the minor, and done a few darker intervals.

(F-777) Believe You Can Be

"Better without the voice"

date: January 27, 2008

The song sounds cool in the beginning, but when the voice came up, it was a little weird to listen to. Your sister doesn't have a bad voice, but the voice sounds young and a bit inexperienced, so it makes this audio piece sound unfinished, like a piece-in-progress. You could try making one using the melody here but sans the singing, or you could work with your sister a little more to get some vibrato and clarity to her tone. Good, though.

The Opera of the Frogs

"Sounds strangely eerie"

date: January 20, 2008

It sounds very neat, and somewhat ethereal when the voices begin to come in. The beginning is characterized with its light, clear sounds, and it seems to be a creepy sort of peaceful music. Who's singing it?
